Media requirements for auto-post

Each channel accepts different media. Before Planoly schedules an auto-post it checks your files and your caption against that channel's rules, and holds the post until they pass.

When the checks run

The checks run when you Schedule post or publish. Save as draft skips them, so you can park a file that is too big and fix it later.

A channel set to Reminder is checked for one thing only: how many media items the post carries. You publish a reminder post by hand, so the platform's publishing rules do not apply to it. Switching a channel to Reminder clears its other errors.

A channel that has already published is not re-checked.

Where a failure shows up

The post builder footer shows an issues button with a count. Open it and the failures are grouped by channel, each line naming the rule that failed. The file itself is flagged on its tile in that channel's media strip, with the same message under the carousel.

What Planoly checks

For each media item:

• Whether the post type takes images, videos, or both.
• The file format, on the channels that declare a list.
• Video length.
• File size. Several channels set a separate, smaller limit for images.
• Aspect ratio, on the channels that declare bounds.
• Minimum dimensions, and for video a maximum.

For the post as a whole: caption length, hashtag count, and the number of media items.

Media limits by channel

"Any" means Planoly does not check that rule for the channel — the platform can still reject the file when it publishes.

Planoly publishes a single-video Post/Reel as a Reel; there is no separate Reel post type to pick.

File formats

Two post types declare a format list:

• TikTok Photo Carousel takes JPEG and WEBP.
• LinkedIn Page Post takes MP4 video, and JPEG, PNG, or GIF images.

On both of these, an image in another format is re-encoded to JPEG for you when you add it, without asking.

Every other channel is checked only on whether the item is an image or a video, not on its format.

Caption and hashtag limits

Three of these are measured in a way worth knowing:

• YouTube counts UTF-8 bytes, so an emoji costs four and an accented letter two.
• LinkedIn counts the caption after its own escaping. Brackets, braces, parentheses, angle brackets, @, *, |, ~, and _ each cost two characters instead of one.
• On Instagram the 30 hashtags are counted across the caption and the first comment together.

A story's caption field is a note for you. Planoly does not send it, and hashtags you put there do not count.

If a file will not pass

Three ways out, in order of least work:

1. Switch that channel to Reminder. The content rules stop applying and Planoly notifies you at the scheduled time to post by hand.
2. Crop or trim the file, then re-upload it.
3. Save the post as a draft and come back to it.
