Why Isn't My Instagram Comment-to-DM Automation Sending?

Most comment-to-DM failures come from three things: the account is missing comment or message permissions, another app owns the conversation, or the DM landed in the person's message requests. Check those first and you'll solve the majority of "it's not sending" problems in a few minutes.

You set up the keyword. You posted. Someone commented "GUIDE." And nothing happened. Or worse, it worked yesterday and not today. If you're a business owner or social media manager, that's a lost lead every time it fails, and it's a common frustration: Reddit and tool community forums are full of threads titled things like "Automated DM from Comment, not being received." This checklist works for any tool. At the end, there's a section specific to Planoly Automations.

Is the Account Connected With Comment and DM Permissions?

Your tool needs two separate permissions from Instagram: one to see comments and one to send messages. If either is missing, the automation can't work, even though everything looks set up.

1. Check the connection is live. Connections can expire. Reconnect the account in your tool if you see any warning.

2. Check comment permission. Without it, the tool never sees the comment, so nothing triggers.

3. Check message permission. Without it, the tool sees the comment but can't reply.

Why it works: Permission problems look like "the automation is broken," but they're fixed in two clicks once you know where to look.

Is Another App Answering My DMs?

This one catches a lot of people. Instagram lets only one app send DMs in each conversation. If you've ever connected another DM tool, a chatbot or a customer service platform, it may still be holding some of your conversations, and your new tool's messages in those threads will fail.

The fix lives in Meta's settings: in the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account, under Instagram Conversation Routing, choose which app is the default. Expect a delay. Planoly's help article notes a conversation another app used recently can take up to 24 hours to switch.

Why it works: Instagram routes each conversation to one app, which keeps people from getting duplicate replies. Choose the app you want answering, and your DMs go through.

Why Did It Go to Message Requests?

It probably didn't fail at all. Meta's private replies documentation explains that a private reply goes to the person's Inbox if they follow your account, or to their Request folder if they don't.

So a non-follower who commented may have your DM waiting in Requests. Two easy fixes:

  • Mention it in your public reply: "Sent! Check your message requests if you don't see it."

  • Add the same note to your caption.

Why it works: Telling people where to look turns a "this didn't work" comment into a delivered freebie.

Why Didn't My Second Comment Get a DM?

Most tools limit how often one person can be messaged, on purpose. Common reasons:

1. One reply per person per post. If someone comments three times, they usually get one DM.

2. Only the first message sent. Instagram allows one private reply to a comment until the person responds. If your tool uses a button to continue and they never tapped it, they won't get the rest.

3. You tested from your own account. Many tools ignore the account owner's comments. Test from a second account.

4. The keyword didn't match. Some tools require an exact, case-sensitive match. Check your tool's matching rules.

5. Two automations competed. If two automations share a keyword, usually only one answers.

Why it works: These are Instagram's messaging rules working as intended to keep DMs welcome. Once you know which one applies, you can design around it.

Other Things to Check

  • Boosted posts and ads. Some tools don't trigger on comments from boosted posts. Metricool's help page, for example, says comments on boosted posts don't trigger its Flows, and Hootsuite's help page says the same for its DM automation. Check your tool's documentation.

  • Viral spikes. Meta caps private replies at 750 calls per hour per Instagram professional account. A post that explodes can push past that.

  • Your plan or usage cap. Some tools stop replying when a plan lapses or a cap is reached. CreatorFlow's pricing page, for example, says automations pause until the next billing cycle once you hit its DM cap.

Troubleshooting Planoly Automations

If you use Planoly, the app tells you what's wrong with a banner. Here's what each one means, from the help article:

1. Instagram disconnected. If Planoly shows that Instagram is disconnected and no automation is running, nothing replies until you select Reconnect Instagram. Your automations are kept.

2. An expiry date. The connection works until that date. Select Reconnect before it.

3. Allow comments. The account was linked without comment permission. Post automations "cannot see new comments without it."

4. Allow direct messages. The account was linked without DM permission. Automations can't reply without it.

5. Connect Instagram. The account is set up for reminders only. Automations can't run on it.

6. "Another app is answering some of @yourhandle's messages." Select Open conversation routing, then choose Planoly as the default app under Instagram Conversation Routing on the linked Facebook Page. The warning clears once a DM gets through.

A few Planoly-specific rules that can look like failures:

  • The post must use Auto-post. With the posting method set to Reminder, the Automations row reads "Automations require Auto-post."

  • Automations reply only while the workspace is on a paid plan. A comment that arrives while it isn't gets no reply, then or later.

  • Planoly never replies to your own comments, including the public replies it posts for you.

  • For DM automations, messages with no text (a shared post or photo) get nothing, and neither does a reply to one particular message in the thread.

  • A paused automation is paused on every post it runs on.

Automations work on feed posts, carousels and Reels, but not on Live comments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Instagram auto DM not working?

The most common causes are missing comment or message permissions, another app owning the conversation through Instagram Conversation Routing, or the DM landing in the person's message requests.

Why did my automated DM go to message requests?

Meta sends private replies to the Inbox if the person follows you and to the Request folder if they don't. Tell non-followers to check their requests.

Can two DM tools work on the same Instagram account?

Instagram lets only one app send DMs in each conversation. If two tools are connected, set the one you want as the default under Instagram Conversation Routing.

Why didn't the person get my follow-up messages?

Instagram allows one private reply to a comment until the person responds. If they didn't tap your button or reply, the follow-ups can't send.

How do I test a comment-to-DM automation?

Comment the keyword from a second account, not your own, then check the tool's results. In Planoly, check Sent and Opened on the Automations page.

TL;DR

  • Check comment and DM permissions first.

  • Make sure only one app owns your conversations (Instagram Conversation Routing).

  • Tell non-followers to check message requests, and test from a second account.

Which of these was your culprit? If you're on Planoly, the Automations help article covers every banner in detail.
