Can You Automate Instagram Story Replies and DMs, Not Just Comments?
Last Updated:

Yes. You can automate replies to Instagram story replies and to DMs that contain a keyword, and because the person messaged you first, the full message sequence can send right away.
Most comment-to-DM advice stops at comments. That leaves out two of the most natural ways people already talk to your business: replying to a story and sliding into your DMs. If you're a business owner who speaks at events, runs a podcast, posts daily stories or just answers the same three questions every week, these two triggers can save you real time. Here's how each one works in Planoly Automations, when to use which, and the rules worth knowing.
How Is a Story-Reply Automation Different From a Comment One?
Three differences matter, all from Planoly's help article:
1. The trigger is a reply to the story. Scope is This story or Every story.
2. There's no public reply. Story replies are private, so there's nothing to post under them.
3. Every message sends right away. On a post, Instagram allows one private reply to a comment until the person answers, which is why Planoly uses an opening message with a button. On a story, the help article explains that every message sends either way, because the story reply already started the conversation.
Why it works: A story reply is already a conversation, so your PDF, link card and follow-up all land in one go, with no tap required.
A couple of story-specific details: each story keeps its own automations, and you can use Copy existing to put one of your other story automations onto a new story. Story automations start once the story is published.
When Should I Use a DM Keyword?
When people won't be looking at a specific post. A DM automation answers a direct message to your Instagram account, across your whole account, whenever it contains your keyword.
Use cases that work well:
1. Events and talks. "DM me the word SLIDES and I'll send you the deck." ManyChat's case study on speaker Candace Junée describes her telling event attendees to "DM her the word 'Think' to receive a free gift" (vendor-reported).
2. Podcasts and videos. Say a keyword out loud at the end of an episode. Listeners DM it, and the resource arrives.
3. Story prompts. "Reply to this story with RECIPE" pairs a story-reply automation with a clear ask.
4. Frequently asked questions. "DM me HOURS for this week's schedule" or "DM me SIZES for the fit guide."
5. Print and packaging. A keyword on a flyer, a business card or a product insert.
Why it works: A keyword DM works anywhere you can say or print a word, not just under a post.
Meta's messaging policy also helps here. When a person messages your business, that opens Meta's "standard messaging window," and "Messages sent within the standard messaging window may contain promotional content." So a product link or offer is fair game once they've reached out.
How Do I Set Up a DM Keyword Automation in Planoly?
DM automations are made on the Automations page only (the post builder offers comments and story replies).
1. Open the Automations page from the main navigation and select New automation.
2. Choose the trigger. Under When someone, open the trigger menu and select "Sends you a DM."
3. Add keywords under "Keywords to watch for." There's no Any words option, so you need at least one keyword. Keywords match the same way as on comments: they ignore case and match anywhere in the message.
4. Build the DM. Select Continue and add your messages: text, photo or video, voice note, PDF, card or gallery. With the opening message off, every message sends.
5. Save it. Select Create automation, or Save as paused if you're not ready.
On the Automations page, a DM automation's row reads "DM" and its keywords. One note: the Planoly mobile app handles comment and story-reply automations, so build DM automations on the web.
What Happens If Someone Sends the Keyword Twice?
They get one answer. Planoly's DM automations send one answer per person per automation in 24 hours.
A few other rules to know, from the help article:
-
Messages with no text, like a shared post or a photo, get nothing.
-
A reply to one particular message in the thread gets nothing.
-
Messages you send yourself never trigger an automation.
Why it works: The 24-hour limit keeps someone who's chatting with you from getting the same canned reply over and over.
Which One Answers If Both Match?
Planoly has a clear order. A reply to your story goes to story automations first. If none of them match, DM automations get a turn. And when several DM automations match the same message, the newest one answers.
So if you have a story automation for RECIPE and an account-wide DM automation for RECIPE, the story one wins on that story. Someone who DMs RECIPE out of the blue gets the DM automation.
Why it works: Specific beats general, so a story-specific offer isn't overridden by your always-on DM reply.
