PLANOLY’s Social Sphere is back like it never left!
Although we were gone for a few weeks, we’re picking up where we left off by giving you the social media news and trends that you need to know. And if you noticed, the news certainly didn’t slow down in our absence.
In one of the most significant moves of the year so far, Facebook launches Shops on Instagram. TikTok recently appointed a new CEO that many thought would be the heir apparent to one of the world’s largest companies, and Instagram launches a new profile tool that helps users connect with products and resources. LinkedIn removes the veil on its long-anticipated Polls feature, and Pinterest brings influencers into the “spotlight” of its shopping feature.
Without further delay, let’s jump into this week’s edition of the Social Sphere:
In the News
Kevin Mayer, who was once widely assumed to be the next head of Disney, was this week appointed the new CEO at TikTok. Mayer will not only take on the role of TikTok CEO, but will also act as COO of the brand’s parent company, ByteDance. In his years at Disney as the company’s head of Direct to Consumer & International Group, Mayer was somewhat of a golden child as he was the man behind some of the brand’s biggest acquisitions–Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and 21st Century Fox. Given Mayer’s connections in the film industry and to all its major studios, TikTok could be on the fast track to Hollywood stardom.
Instagram this week rolls out its new “Guides” tool aimed at digital and physical well-being by directing users to recommendations, tips, and other wellness-related content curated by select business users and content creators. The new tab located on in the user’s profile section sandwiched between “Posts,” “Mentions,” and “IGTV.” Given the concerns surrounding the global pandemic, Instagram will first focus on wellness content with “Guides.” Creators will be allowed to connect with organizations to share their resources, tips, and wellness content to help users cope with anxiety and other social disorders. Check the link above for more.
LinkedIn Polls is officially here. Designed to generate more engagement and communication on the social networking platform, “Polls” aim to generate conversation among members by asking them for their perspectives about various topics. LinkedIn Polls are available now.
In a move that will undoubtedly shift the way we view e-commerce, Facebook introduces Shops on Instagram. This fully immersive digital storefront allows businesses to tell a complete brand story and enhance product discovery in one native shopping experience. IG users can visit business shops from their profile through the feed or Stories.
The in-app purchasing process is seamless and allows the shopper to purchase goods and services without leaving the app to checkout. This one-spot shopping experience is the wave of a new consumer future. Find out more in the link above.
As Pinterest continues to enhance its expansive new shopping feature, the company recently announced an extension to its blossoming e-commerce platform called Shopping Spotlights. Featuring expert recommendations from influential fashion insiders, home tastemakers, and publishers, their shopping recommendations come directly to you. Pinterest users will also get the editor’s picks and have the ability to shop Pinterest Trends. The company says, “shopping spotlights will appear on the search tab with articles featuring product Pins that link directly to in-stock retailer.”
Since attending classes of any sort is out for the foreseeable future, Google is rolling out additional services related to its Grow with Google. The program will now include free training and online educational courses with topics that include learning more about Google search, how to optimize Google ads, and ways to improve your website performance. Google had this to say about the new program:
“We’ll offer digital skills training, interviews with career experts and programming from partners including Merit America and the National Congress of American Indians. Topics will include “How to manage your business remotely in times of uncertainty” and “How to improve your resume with four practical strategies.”
