Our social-sphere series continues with lots of exciting new updates in the digital world! Instagram has been busy releasing so many incredible new features. Today, we’re sharing a few articles to keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in the social landscape. From a new dark mode on Instagram (have you made the switch yet?!) to exciting new AR shopping features…we’re spilling the tea on all of the news you should know! Read on to stay informed.
Instagram has stepped over to the dark side! The new iOS 13 update lets users switch their Instagram app to dark mode. You can only do this in your phone’s general settings, not within the Instagram app itself. Dark mode is said to be easier on your eyes and better for your battery life, so give it a try!
Instagram released a new messaging app called Threads, which is designed to be utilized by you and your “close friends” list from IG. The app lets you set a status, send DM’s, and share images and video messages. It pulls your previous messages with anyone on your ‘Close Friends’ list on Instagram, so any messages you send from Threads will show up on your Instagram app as well and vice versa. The app has received mixed reviews from users so far; according to Business Insider, “fewer than .1% of Instagram users have bought into the hype of the platform’s latest Snapchat competitor, Threads.” We’ll be interested to see how it holds up.
This new shopping feature allows users to try on products within the Instagram app using augmented reality technology! It’s currently only available to a handful of brands: Warby Parker, Ray-Ban, Mac, and Nars. With the holidays around the corner, they released it at the perfect time! We heard through the grapevine that Instagram is testing a new Group Stories feature! It’s not available yet, but there is some information about the potential update thanks to app junkie, Jane Manchun Wong. Facebook previously offered the feature but chose to remove it back in September. It will most likely work by choosing to “Share a Group Story” to create an exclusive experience in a group context. It’s a way to communicate with a curated collective of peers instead of your much larger group of “Close Friends.” We’ll keep you posted on when and if this feature is released!
Apple will be releasing 230 new emojis with the iOS 13.2 update! This will open up a world of possibilities for creative content, so we can’t wait. A few of the new emojis include a sloth, skunk, yawn, garlic, waffle, falafel, parachute, and banjo! They’ll also offer new ‘people holding hands’ options that are both gender and skin tone inclusive. Look out for all the new emojis when 13.2 becomes available!
