Podcasts have become many people’s current favorite way to consume information. Statistics show that 30% of time spent listening to audio sources goes to podcasts, so it’s time to start listening now! The new favorite medium has given an opportunity for people to share their stories and advice in an accessible way. As a business owner, podcasts are a great way to reach a new audience and expand your business. Below are a few steps on how to get started on your podcast, and some key marketing tactic you can use to promote it.
The first step you should take in starting a podcast is to narrow in on your concept, a name, and at least ten different topics to cover. If you can’t think of more than ten, you may need to go back to the drawing board and hone in on your overall podcast theme. Your podcast category and subcategory are some things you should not overlook as well. There are tons of categories and subcategories to choose from on iTunes like tech news, politics, music, and health. Be sure to choose a category that best fits your theme and is easily searchable for your audience. If you’re having trouble narrowing it down, look to podcasts similar to yours and take note of what category and subcategory they use.
Once you have the first step down, you can start looking at what type of format and structure you’d want for your podcast. How long would you like to keep the majority of your episodes? Do you want to include guests? How many segments will you have in your podcast? These are all important questions to ask before you hit record.
Artwork and Bio
Now that you know what type of structure your podcast will have and have solidified a name, you can start the fun stuff! When creating the artwork, remember that most of this will be viewed on a mobile device so your text should be easily readable on smaller screens. You’ll need to provide artwork, and a description of your podcast to every steaming network you plan to host your podcast on. When creating your description, you’ll want to include as many relevant keywords that will help with your search engine optimization (SEO). All streaming platforms typically work like a search engine, so potential listeners could find you by searching “marketing”, “hip hop”, “tech updates”, etc.
Sound and Equipment
If you have the budget to purchase equipment the most critical piece to purchase first would be your microphone. Most external microphones connect through a USB port which makes it easy to plug and record with no installation. You can find a decent quality external microphone for under $50.
If you want a more quality sound, you can also invest in a more expensive XLR microphone that connects directly into a mixer. However, if you do not want to spend more money, a USB microphone would work just well. Most podcasts have fairly simple setups so don’t feel the need to invest in a ton of equipment, especially if this is your first podcast.

Audio Recording Software
Some popular recording softwares that we recommend are Audacity, GarageBand, and Ableton. These three are a great alternative to paid, premium audio editing software. You can find some great tutorials online to help you navigate the software, but most are relatively simple to use and allow you to edit your recordings if need be.
Get Your Podcast Out
Publish your podcast everywhere. iTunes is the most common place to host your podcast, but to ensure you reach a large audience, it’s best that you list your podcast in as many directories relevant to your category. A good area to start is iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, SoundCloud, Stitcher, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio.
Website and Social
Create a website and social channels for your podcast. You’ll need to create a domain that you can use to “anchor” your podcasts brand. Every time you release new episodes, you’ll be able to redirect your audience to your site via social media. You can announce new episodes, news, and information you’d like to share with your listeners on both your website and social media channels to keep them in the loop.
