Branding is everything. What is your advice when it comes to creating a brand that people love?

Be consistent. Choose a handful of fonts & colors that complement your work, & carry that style throughout your website, social media pages, & branding materials. People will start to recognize your ‘look’ and will associate a certain level of quality with your brand.

Of course, branding encompasses all the visuals that go along with a business, but we often forget about the voice behind the brand, which is what leaves a lasting impression on others. Creating a consistent voice is just as important, if not more important, as creating a visual identity.

Be relatable. Instead of strictly sharing products or work-related posts, try to create content that offers value to others. Whether we’re sharing an inspirational quote or a photo of our daughter, Griffin, we want our brand to resonate with other small business owners who are balancing work, life, and everything in-between.

Share things that make you laugh. Not everyone is a comedian, and that’s okay – but if your co-worker or spouse says something that’s hilarious (and appropriate for your audience), share it! There are enough serious things going on in the world. We could all use a good laugh from time to time!

We love your IG! It’s a great mixture of beautiful photos and graphic design. How did you choose your theme and how do you stay consistent?

Neither of us has a background in professional photography, so creating a cohesive feed was something we struggled with. Once we started using branded graphics with consistent fonts & colors, we were able to tie everything together while maintaining a look that is unique to Bittersweet. Our style is always changing, so we try to mix things up as our work evolves.

What are your top tips when it comes to connecting and engaging with your followers on Instagram?

  • Give more than you expect to receive. You can’t sit back and wait for the ‘likes’ and ‘follows’ to come rolling in without engaging with your tribe on a regular basis.

It’s important to let your followers know you care about what they’re doing & appreciate their support.
  • Engage with other creatives. It just takes a second to leave a comment on someone else’s feed. Since we aren’t able to meet with the majority of our followers in-person, interacting with other creatives on Instagram is the equivalent of tapping them on the shoulder and saying, “Hey, how’s it going?”
  •

Ask questions. Give viewers a reason to leave a comment. You only have a second or two to catch someone’s attention, so make your questions simple & straightforward.

    Good design looks like

…good Scandinavian furniture. It’s simple, yet functional.

    We gain inspiration from

…our peers! It’s amazing to see so many talented individuals sharing their journey as they navigate entrepreneurship.

The best part of this career is

…the flexibility it allows for us to spend time with our daughter & experience life through her curious little self.

    We feel most creative when

    …we’re fueled up on coffee!!

A “normal” day in our life looks like

…making lots of messes, cleaning up lots of messes, diffusing meltdowns, & attempting to get some work done somewhere in the mix.
